Your vehicles timing and camshaft chains can stretch and should be replaced. Vehicles with timing belts must have them replaced.

  • EA113 is timing belt and upper (camshaft) chain (AXX, BPY, BWA, CDL, BHZ) such as MK5 GTI, MK6R & S3 8P
  • EA888 is timing chain & camshaft chain (CCZA, CCZB, CCTA) such as MK6 GTI & A4 B8
  • EA888.3 such as MK7 & 8V 2013+ is timing chain & upper chain
  • You will need to replace your cam follower on EA113
  • You will need to replace your timing chain tensioner on MK6 GTI

Service & Maintenance Guide

Minor Service - Oil Service

Every 10k is a minor service - oil and filter. Do not follow the factory 15K and go 7k for tuned vehicles. Oil is cheap, engines are not!

Intermediate Service

Every 30k is an intermediate service - oil and filter, cabin filter & air filter, brake fluid flush, remote batteries.

Major Service

Every 60k is a major service - oil and filter, cabin filter & air filter, remote batteries, brake fluid flush, fuel filter, DSG gearbox oil and filter (unless automatic, manual, tiptronic or multitronic), spark plugs and haldex oil.

Additional: Water pump & timing belt and poly belt on belt driven engines should be done every 60k.

Intermediate Service

Every 90k is another intermediate service - same as 30k plus a poly belt / accessory belt.

Minor Service - Oil Service

Every 10k is a minor service - oil and filter. Do not follow the factory 15K and go 7k for tuned vehicles. Oil is cheap, engines are not!

Every 90k is another intermediate service - same as 30k plus a poly belt / accessory belt.

Replace Haldex fluid every 30k rather than 60k, Gearbox oil change at 40k for DSG is advised. Front and rear differential oils are "longlife" but replace every 60k to be safe.
