Typically older generation diverter valves wear and break with age and need replacing. This is common on the 8P/8J and MK5/MK6 platforms. When ECU tuned they can split straight away, upgrade to the latest version or simply replace.

There are two types (diaphragm - older) and (piston - newer).

Service & Maintenance Guide

Minor Service - Oil Service

Every 10k is a minor service - oil and filter. Do not follow the factory 15K and go 7k for tuned vehicles. Oil is cheap, engines are not!

Intermediate Service

Every 30k is an intermediate service - oil and filter, cabin filter & air filter, brake fluid flush, remote batteries.

Major Service

Every 60k is a major service - oil and filter, cabin filter & air filter, remote batteries, brake fluid flush, fuel filter, DSG gearbox oil and filter (unless automatic, manual, tiptronic or multitronic), spark plugs and haldex oil.

Additional: Water pump & timing belt and poly belt on belt driven engines should be done every 60k.

Intermediate Service

Every 90k is another intermediate service - same as 30k plus a poly belt / accessory belt.

Minor Service - Oil Service

Intermediate Service

Every 90k is another intermediate service - same as 30k plus a poly belt / accessory belt.

Replace Haldex fluid every 30k rather than 60k, Gearbox oil change at 40k for DSG is advised. Front and rear differential oils are "longlife" but replace every 60k to be safe.
